The Definition of a Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies are acute incidents of toothache or trauma to your teeth, gums, or jaws. Here are some examples:

– Having a tooth knocked out
– An abscess
– Severe toothache
– A chipped or cracked tooth
– Loss or damage of a crown

If you’re in doubt about whether something is a dental emergency, call us as soon as possible.

Your Dental Emergency Plan

As soon as you experience a potential dental emergency, call us immediately. We will discuss your problem and identify how soon you need to see us. In the meantime, there are some steps you can take to manage your symptoms and improve your outcome.

Abscess

If pus is forming around the bottom of your teeth, you have an abscess. This can also cause tenderness in your lymph nodes. Do not take any painkillers or use any gels to numb the area.

Keep your mouth clean until you can see us. When brushing your teeth or flossing, avoid the affected area.

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water just before your emergency appointment. This will help draw out the pus.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Losing a tooth can cause stress. The gap it leaves behind could also bring on problems at a later time.

If you’ve lost a tooth, we can sometimes save it. Place the tooth back into the socket if you’re able. Otherwise, put it in a glass of milk and bring it to your appointment.

Toothache

A severe toothache could indicate an infection and may require root canal treatment. Unbearable dental pain can prevent you from eating or sleeping. Take painkillers if needed, and use a cold compress to reduce swelling.

Damaged Tooth

A chip or a crack doesn’t always call for an emergency appointment, but in some cases, it might. If the damaged area of the tooth could harm your mouth, an emergency repair could prevent additional problems.

Take care to avoid touching the damaged tooth with your hands or tongue.
